“The Chinese people possess three knives.” Have you ever heard this old adage before? The three are the Chinese chopper/kitchen knife, tailor shears, and razor. The adage refers to how the Chinese have emigrated to all points around the world, and how in each place they seem to specialize in restaurants, laundries or tailor shops, and barber shops. This immigrant tradition also applies in Taiwan, and the venerable Shangri-la – Custom Tailor & Dress Maker, a well-known maker of Western-style attire, is a prime example.
Shangri-la’s distinctive green shop sign is spotted immediately as you step out of the left-side entrance of the Grand Formosa Regent hotel. The shop was opened seven years ago by Chen Qing-huang and his son; Chen has over 30 years of experience in crafting Western-style apparel. The shop is clean, bright, and inviting, and the moment you step inside you are greeted
with a warm “Welcome!” and a fresh cup of tea is presented to you, immediately making you feel at home. On the table to the left is a computer for you to use when waiting, with Internet access. The walls are decorated with photos of customers and staff together – from the West, from the East, and even from Africa. The photos are testament to Shangri-la’s international experience. |
